DMC, now a member of the prestigious Animation Council of the Phil

To keep abreast with the recent developments in the Information Technology world, especially with the new Animation Center constructed in the DMC College Foundation campus, DMC College of Computer Studies (CCS) dean, Dr. Gerald T. Concha attended the 2nd General Membership meeting of the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. held at the Manila A Function Room in Makati Shangri-La, Ayala Avenue, Makati City on June 26.

The symposium featured an induction of new members and reports with regard membership affairs. Moreover, the meeting also featured the launching of the Animahenasyon website, www.animationcouncil.org.

“We are thrilled to be part of a prestigious and exclusive organization such as the ACPI. It brings us great honor and pride that DMC has been accepted as an institutional member. Being admitted into membership is no easy feat. ACPI is very serious in checking the performance of a school, its multimedia and animation capabilities in terms of manpower and equipment. So, this is something we are really proud of,” Concha said.

The ACPI is a 40-member association of animation companies with a mission to promote and market the Philippine animation industry here and abroad. Aside from conducting workshops to Filipino animators, ACPI has partnered with educational institutions like the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in developing the training regulations and helping in coming up with the assessment tools for schools and other institutions who want to offer animation courses. The industry hopes to graduate 25,000 fresh, industry-ready animators by 2010 to be able to handle the global business demand.

This is important since Filipino animators is in demand worldwide as we are preferred as outsourcing partners of big international production outfits not just because of our lower costs of services, but these big companies rely on us due to our English proficiency, consistent quality and speed in delivering output, and ability to comprehend concepts and story lines better than our Asian counterparts.

According to the ACPI website, Filipino animators were behind some of the world’s best-loved cartoons and animated films – Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry, Addams Family, The Mask, The Jetsons, Dragon Ball Z, Captain Planet, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles – all under entertainment giants such as Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, HBO, Marvel Comics, Hanna Barbera and producers of Japanese anime.

Moreover, Filipinos are also staples in creating graphics for different platforms for the gaming industry (Nintendo, Sega, Game Gear, Game Boy and Sony Playstation).

The next general membership meeting will be on September 25.

“DMC shares this honor and pride with the province of Zamboanga del Norte, as it is the first and only ACPI member here in our province. Once again, DMC College Foundation's CCS has blazed a trail in education,” Concha proudly proclaims.

Meanwhile, in other news, four educational institutions in Dipolog graced the 9th HRSD Conference and Exhibits at the Almont Inland Resort in J.C. Aquino Avenue in Butuan City on August 11-13.

Among those who attended the three-day affair were Joelito “Toto” Turno of DMC College Foundation, Engr Florentino D. Diana of the Dipolog City Institute of Technology, Engr. Armand A. Amatong of the Andres Bonifacio College, and Gina Sorronda of the Saint Vincent’s College.

Dipolog private schools hold sports elims (July 3, 2010)

Dipolog private schools hold sports elims (July 3, 2010)

With the Department of Education of Region IX giving Dipolog City private schools roughly two weeks in preparation for the division elimination in selected sports events in preparation for the 2010 Home and Away Games, private schools in Dipolog scampered to hold competitions amongst the five private schools.

The Dep Ed memo announced that the Division Elimination games for elementary and high school will be on July 8 and 9. The events are volleyball for men and women with games for elementary to be played at the Dipolog Pilot Demonstration School gym and the high school games at the Zamboanga del Norte National High School (ZNNHS); basketball for men to be held at the Andres Bonifacio College (ABC) Open Court; baseball (men) at the ZNNHS; football (men) at the ABC Football Field; softball (men) at the ZNNHS; sepak takraw (men) at the ZNNHS; badminton (men and women) at the Sta. Filomena Badminton Center; and tennis (men and women) at the Mibang Country Club.

On strength of the Dep Ed memorandum dated June 24, the DMC College Foundation Science High School, Saint Mary’s Academy (SMA) and ABC met at the DMC Sports Coordinator’s Office last June 28 to finalize the private schools action on the said letter. Despite not having any representative, the Saint Vincent’s College (SVC) and the Dipolog Chinese School (DCS) also relayed that they are amenable to any action the group will decide for the private schools.

Representing the DMC group during the meeting were DMC Sports Coordinator Joelito Turno, High School Sports Coordinator Bonnie Arnesto, DMC SHS Football Assistant Coach Ronald Rael and DMC SHS Basketball Coach Tyrone Jay V. Samson. Also appearing were Johnson Rubillos of SMA and Ernesto Ayawan of ABC. Despite their absence, SVC’s Gil Darcera and Vic Reyes of DCS are in contact with the group.

“The memo was given on a very short leash, private schools in Dipolog are given a very short period for us to hold competitions among ourselves to select, let alone prepare, the best team and individuals we can send to the unit level competition,” one private school official complained of the Dep Ed’s memo.

One of the main topics tackled during the meeting is the holding and selection of the Private School’s basketball team.

Upon recommendation of DMC head coach Samson, the group decided to make the champion team of the private schools basketball tournament to be held on July 1 to 4 at the DMC Covered Court the representative for the Unit Level eliminations. The champion team’s coach will then have the option to take players from other teams to be incorporated to the champion team as he sees fit and upon approval of the mother school.

However, before the tournament started, the SVC team has already begged off from competing in the Unit Level competition for basketball as the schedule is in conflict with their examinations. During the opening day of basketball tournament, host team DMC five backed by their home court fans drubbed the DCS team 85-45 in the first game with SVC winning a nail-biter, 57-52 over the ABC squad.

In line with this, the group has decided that if the SVC HS team becomes champion, the private school’s representative for the Unit Level competition will automatically be the runner up.

With regard the other events, the DMC and ABC football teams will compete to earn the right to represent the private schools on July 3 at 8 am in the ABC Football field. The volleyball men will be represented by DMC with team from DMC and ABC holding a match on July 3, 8 am in ABC to represent the women’s team in the Unit Level competitions. The badminton event will be represented by SVC.
